Better Vision for Your Child, More Freedom for You – The OrthoK Guide
Could you — or your child — wake up and see clearly without glasses?
At The Vision Clinic, we help both children and adults take control of myopia with orthokeratology — a safe, reversible overnight treatment that corrects vision and, in children, slows its decline.
If your child has been diagnosed with myopia, you’ll know the routine well. New glasses every year. A prescription that keeps creeping up. Squinting at the board at school, lost contact lenses, the constant worry about what their eyesight will look like in ten years’ time.
What many parents don’t know is that there’s a treatment that doesn’t just correct your child’s vision — it can actively slow down how quickly it worsens. It’s called orthokeratology, and at The Vision Clinic, it’s one of the most impactful things we offer for children with progressive myopia.
And it’s not just for children. Many adults are discovering OrthoK too — and wondering why nobody told them about it sooner.
“It doesn’t just help them see more clearly today — it works to protect their vision for years to come.”
What is orthokeratology (OrthoK)?
OrthoK uses specially designed contact lenses worn only at night, while you sleep. Overnight, the lenses gently and safely reshape the front surface of the eye — the cornea — so that by morning, when the lenses are removed, vision is clear throughout the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses.
There’s no surgery involved, no recovery period, and no lasting commitment. If you ever decide to stop, the eyes simply return to their natural shape over time. It’s one of the few vision correction options that is fully reversible.
For children: slowing myopia before it takes hold
This is the part that surprises most parents. OrthoK isn’t only about clear vision today — it’s about what happens to your child’s eyes over the coming years.
Myopia in children tends to worsen steadily, often through the teenage years and into early adulthood. The higher the prescription climbs, the greater the long-term risks — including increased likelihood of conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration in later life.
Clinical research has shown that OrthoK can meaningfully slow the rate of myopia progression in children. In many cases, it doesn’t just pause the decline — it significantly reduces how much the prescription increases year on year. For a child whose myopia is progressing quickly, that can make a real and lasting difference to their lifelong eye health.
“Every fraction of a dioptre we can prevent matters — not just for how they see now, but for the health of their eyes decades from now.”
Beyond the clinical benefits, parents regularly tell us about the practical difference OrthoK makes to their child’s daily life. No more lost or broken glasses. No more sitting at the front of the class just to see the board. More confidence in sport, swimming, and social situations. For children who have worn glasses since a young age, the change can feel quite significant.
What age can children start OrthoK?
OrthoK is suitable for children from around the age of six upwards, provided they are responsible enough to follow the care routine with parental support. Many of our youngest patients take to it remarkably well, particularly with engaged parents involved in the nightly routine.
The earlier myopia management begins, the greater the potential benefit — so if your child has been diagnosed with myopia and their prescription is changing, it’s worth having a conversation sooner rather than later.
For adults: freedom from glasses and daytime lenses
OrthoK isn’t only a children’s treatment — and for many adults, it opens a door they didn’t know existed.
Perhaps you’ve been wearing glasses or soft contact lenses for years and find them frustrating. Perhaps you’ve looked into laser surgery but felt uncertain about something permanent. Perhaps your lifestyle — sport, swimming, physical work, long hours on screen — makes daytime lenses uncomfortable or impractical. OrthoK addresses all of these without any of the commitment that surgery involves.
Adults with mild to moderate myopia are often excellent candidates. You wear the lenses overnight, wake up with clear vision, and get on with your day. No lens case in your pocket, no glasses to clean, no end-of-day dryness that so many soft lens wearers know well.
For adults who are active, OrthoK is particularly liberating. Swimmers don’t need prescription goggles. Runners and cyclists aren’t dealing with glasses fogging or bouncing. Contact sport becomes less of a hassle. Even for those with a more everyday lifestyle, simply waking up and being able to see clearly — without reaching for anything — is something patients consistently tell us they hadn’t anticipated how much they’d value.
OrthoK is also worth considering if you’ve been told you’re not a suitable candidate for laser surgery due to corneal thickness or other factors. For some of those patients, OrthoK achieves similar daytime freedom through an entirely different mechanism — and without touching the cornea permanently.
“Many of our adult patients tell us they wish they’d known about OrthoK years ago.”
What does the process look like?
Whether for you or your child, we take a personalised approach at The Vision Clinic. Here’s what to expect:
- Initial consultation & corneal mapping — We carry out a detailed assessment of the eyes, including corneal topography, which creates a precise 3D map of the eye’s surface. This is completely pain-free and takes just a few minutes.
- Custom lens design — Based on that map, lenses are individually manufactured to exact corneal measurements. Every pair is bespoke.
- First night & review — After the first night of wear, we check in to see how the eyes have responded and make any adjustments needed. Most patients — children and adults alike — adapt quickly and comfortably.
- Ongoing monitoring — We review vision and eye health regularly to track progress, update the prescription if needed, and ensure everything is working as it should.
Is it safe?
OrthoK has a strong, well-documented safety record and has been used for decades across all age groups. The lenses are made from highly oxygen-permeable materials, allowing the eyes to breathe freely overnight.
Because the lenses are worn during sleep rather than during the day, the risk of discomfort or accidental damage is significantly reduced compared to standard daytime contact lenses. Children and adults tend to adapt well, and side effects are uncommon when lenses are fitted correctly and cared for properly.
As with any contact lens wear, good hygiene is essential. We’ll take the time to walk you through exactly how to clean, store, and handle the lenses safely, and our team is always on hand if questions arise between appointments.
Is OrthoK right for you or your child?
OrthoK works best for those with mild to moderate myopia, and suitability depends on corneal shape and prescription. Not everyone will be a candidate, and we’ll always give you an honest assessment. The only way to know for certain is to come in for a consultation.
